CLEO JACOB
About me
Hi ! I’m a creative individual working on multiple project in Freelance, in different fields such as writing, branding and graphic design. I’m French and I have just graduated from the University of Montreal in Creative writing and Cinema. I’m full of initiative and regularly integrate fresh ideas in what I do. I have five years of studying in writing behind me, and throughout my apprentissage, I became very fond of graphic design, using both skills of drawing and writing in my work.
My approach
I compare my writing to retro cartoons like Tom & Jerry : we follow the adventures of the animals, but the humans, often associated with reality and rationality, are never fully visible. We catch glimpses of legs, arms, sometimes a body, but we never see the adult entirely. They are disconnected from the reality of Tom & Jerry. In the same vein, my main character is like a spectator with a limited view of the adult world around them. They perceive or interpret what they can, without fully understanding everything. It’s the parallel with the reader that I find interesting : the reader can capture both the child’s incomprehension and the reality of the adult that eludes them. As I like to work with fresh characters amazed by their own world, I find similarities perfectly and candidly used in cinema, in many different approaches. The contrast and durability between child and adult is beautifully shown in the Pixar movie Up, in which these completely opposed personality find perfect balance, creating this surprising yet perfect friendship between Mr. Fredrickson and Russell. For the Pixar Studios, one of my favorite must be their short film named Bao. In a more eccentric way, we can find the duality in a mother-son relationship, beautifully directed.
Since I love working with young characters, I am very fond of Hayao Miyazaki’s work. His characters are always very young, yet shown to be very mature, independant and determined to reach their goal. His character’s age doesn’t affect their strong personality, they are valued and shown as powerful characters.
One of my other personal favorites would have to be Gary Ross’s Pleasantville, 1998. I love to find the adult characters being shown with the same amazed eye as a child would have, discovering their own world for the first time, their own passions, in the most honest yet naive way. Their characters are pictured as very spontaneous and genuine in the process of discovering themselves and their universe.
